A Ragdoll Cat with Sensitive Stomach (gluten intolerance)

by Barbara
(Calgary, Canada)

My female Ragdoll cat developed a very sensitive stomach (was this Celiac Disease?) as soon as she was put on the Science Diet Adult cat food. She vomited almost daily, but continued to maintain her weight. She developed skin problems and recurrent eye infections. I spent a lot of money on vet consultations, and tried a variety of vet recommended cat foods. When the Tainted gluten in pet food scandal broke, I found a gluten free food, Wellness Core. She gained a little appropriate weight, stopped throwing up, eyes and skin mostly cleared up,and she became much friendlier.

Then she became cranky and started inappropriate urination. She was constipated! So now she gets Core wellness (high protein, no gluten) with Precise (medium protein, no gluten and probiotics and more fiber) and I give her Femalt hairball remedy one to two times /week.

Her eyes and skin are completely clear, she is a happy, friendly cat, and no more urinating outside the litter box! Just wanted this information out there. It could save a lot of vet bills and make some cats and their owners a lot happier. I also have her brother, and he can eat anything with protein with no problems.

Barbara

Thanks a lot for this, Barbara. I am sure it will help many cats and people. I changed the title slightly. This is to make this information more easy to find by people searching for it. I hope you approve.

Celiac Disease

What is this disease? It is also called Coeliac disease. It is a genetically inherited disease. It is caused by a reaction to a gluten protein found in wheat, which causes an inflammatory autoimmune reaction in the digestive tract. The symptoms include diarrhea and weight loss. It affects humans as well. There are a number of diseases that affect cats and humans.

Brilliant! Thank you
by: sarah elliott

My Ragdoll is two years old and has started vomiting everyday. I first thought it was furballs so tried all the remedies but when he started loosing weight I became worried, he has a sister and she too is fine on the high quality food they eat.

I found that feeding him chicken an white fish cured the vomiting straight away! I wasn't aware that cat foods were available for food intolerances or that it's gluten that is likely to be the problem, so THANK YOU very much for a great post :-)

Ragdolls & Gluten
by: Anonymous

I too have a ragdoll who had a gluten intolerance. As soon as I put her on a holistic all natural diet her vomiting ceased! (And this after SEVERAL trips to the vet--I just figured it out myself--after a friend of mine's daughter had a gluten allergy!! Sometimes we have to be our OWN pet's advocate

The Importance of Diet
by: Anonymous

Thanks for sharing this experience. Diet is very important and some manufacturers of cat food are now becoming more concerned and producing a diet truly fit for a cat.
