Max Our Egyptian Mau

by Angela
(Cedar Rapids, IA)

Max at 3 months old

Max at 3 months old

My husband and I got Max as a 6 week old kitten from a pet store. I had no idea what breed he was, I thought he was an ordinary tabby. When we got him home, my son was the one that noticed the spots on his body and recognized him as an Egyptian Mau. I know he's not a purebred but posses so many of the characteristics such as the spotted body, stripped legs, the "worried look" face, mascara markings on the face and the scarab mark on his forehead.

His vocal is like none I have ever heard, he does his own little babbling at times that is very interesting to listen to. He is very active and likes to give our other 4 cats a hard time with his playfulness. He has his own bed that he sleeps in. He's extremely lovable also. As soon as he is petted, he starts his warm hearted purring. He has seemed to have adopted us as his own. He is now 4 months old and thinks he's the king of the house.

Mau Joy!
by: Lisa, UK

I acquired my Mau exactly the same way i.e. by accident. I didn't know she was a Mau for several months (she's a melanistic black Mau).

Angela, you are in for a treat! They are amazingly loving, intelligent and entertaining cats.

You're right about the vocals and the purring - mine chirrups and makes a variety of noises - whilst the purring is amazing, like several tones of purring overlapping!

You'll probably also notice they are very fast. Mine tears around the house trying to entice me to play chase with her.

Also, watch your things - my Mau has a thing for my lipbalms. They kept going missing for ages and I didn't know where until I found them all in a little pile with some of her toys under the sofa!!!!
