My Cat Won't Eat

Under these circumstances, this is were your cat should be - photo copyright Stockxpert

Under these circumstances, this is were your cat should be - photo copyright Stockxpert

My cat is 3 years old and has been healthy. Now, he has lost considerable weight and will not eat.

He will rarely drink water, then lays down by the dish and looks confused as to why he is there.

He walks a little ways and then kind of flops over and lays down.

He is an indoor cat, gets food regularly, what has happened? It is like he has gone downhill overnight.

Thanks!!

Hi... Thanks for popping by and asking. The answer of course is to see a good vet as soon as possible but there is no harm in discussing this here as well.

Your cat is clearly not just being picky. He is ill.

You cats symptoms are not just a loss of appetite which is a general symptom. Diagnosis just on that symptom is impossible; tests need to be carried out. Your cat seems to me to be feeling very unwell and as a consequence has lost appetite. The failure to drink too is very worrying. Listlessness is caused by an underlying disease and/or lack of food and water.

My immediate thought is a concern that this could be a serious illness so as I said a vet is needed. And I understand the reluctance because of the costs etc.

There are a number of nasty diseases that cause loss of appetite. All unwell cats might suffer a loss of appetite.

FeLV causes general lethargy and loss of appetite for example.

I discuss feline weight loss in which other nasty diseases such as FIV and FIP are mentioned.

I discuss FIP here

Have there been other symptoms such as a vomiting, diarrhea or jaundice?

FIV is Feline Aids and one general symptom is loss of appetite and listlessness.

There are other illlnesses. On this page I cover cat illness symptoms.

Another possibility is feline pancreatitis as it causes weight loss/loss of appetite. There are other possible symptoms such as vomiting.

Other possibles are poisoning, mouth disease and obstructions in digestive tract or mouth.

Feline Distemper is very serious and causes the cat to stop drinking. A cat with this disease is obviously very ill.

I hope this helps a bit. As I said the symptoms are too general to allow me to pin down a diagnosis (which I wouldn't do anyway as only a vet can do that).

The above are not comprehensive but likely causes, I feel.

If you can't afford it most vets will work out a payment plan or hold a check. I've lost cats with these symptoms to both poisoning and FIP(which is fatal). Let us all know what happens.

Please go to the vet ASAP
by: Brooke

I have learned the hard way that even the smallest change in a cats behavior can mean trouble. This is by no means a small change and your cat needs help. A fast diagnosis could mean the difference between life and death. My thoughts of a speedy recovery are with you both.

Advice from retired vet nurse
by: Ruth

You need to take your cat to a vet urgently !It sounds like he may have a blockage somewhere inside which is making him feel full up and so he can't eat or drink.
He may be bleeding internally from this as he flops down and looks confused. Look at his gums, if they are pale don't wait another minute, phone the vet as an emergency.
The sooner you get help the more chance he will recover.
Good luck, please let us know what happens.
